The real reason why Matthew Perry left Julia Roberts

Friends star Matthew Perry once did his best to be with Julia Roberts. He recently revealed how he wooed the Hollywood icon with hundreds of fax messages. But that was until he ditched her because of fear that she would dump him one day sooner or later.

The 53-year-old actor revealed that their romance blossomed after Roberts appeared in the sitcom in 1995.

After being offered the role, The Pretty Woman actress said that she would also make a guest appearance if she could be in the story alongside Perry’s character, Chandler Bing. And right after that, the producers urged him to contact the actress.

Perry recalled:

‘I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read, “The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers.”

He added:

‘Not only did Julia agree to do the show, but she also sent me a gift – bagels, lots and lots of bagels,’

Roberts’ agreement to appear in a special episode of the second series of the hit show was the beginning of their romance.

The three-month courtship was initiated through daily faxes while Julia was shooting for a movie in  France. By the time shooting of Friends’ special episode even started, they were already a couple.

Perry watched Roberts win an Oscar from rehab

In his upcoming autobiography, Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing, Perry revealed that the new lovebirds exchanged hundreds of letters before email was in fashion.

He writes:

‘Three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive.”

”I was so excited that some nights I would find myself out at some party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived. Nine times out of ten, one had.”

While their relationship was slowly becoming the talk of the town, Perry dumped her just two months after she appeared on the show.

He admits:

‘Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable.’

‘So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.’

He continued:

‘She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.’

Perry’s book, which will be published on November 1, also explains his life-threatening experience with opioids.

The star also confesses that five years after their breakup, he watched Roberts win her Oscar for her role in the hit movie Erin Brockovich from rehab, sweating and twitching.
